While social distancing is a necessary intervention to slow the spread of covid19, it also forces us to spend most of our time close to the people we live with, in the confines of our homes. Many who began this period of social distancing without symptoms will become ill due to earlier exposure. Social distancing will minimize spread outside the home but increase the likelihood of contaminating those we whom we live.

In such circumstances there are things we can do to minimize the spread of covid19 at home.

Obviously if someone becomes symptomatic or has covid19, attempts must be made to quarantine them within the home or, if necessary, get them to the hospital.

1. Air Flow

Because covid19 is an airborne virus, more air moving through a living space dilutes the concentration of virus. Open windows as much as possible. Ideally windows can be opened to allow air to travel through (in and out) the home.

2. Air Treatment

Viruses have been shown to live longer in low humidity. Higher humidity levels lower flu transmission. It is therefore advisable to run a humidifier in your home.

3. The Bathroom

This space requires special attention. Studies have shown that people shed virus from their feces. Flushing toilets after defecating aerosolizes the virus which can remain in the air for up to 30 minutes. Close the toilet lid before flushing and keep the exhaust fan on at all times. If you have the luxury of several bathrooms, do not share them.

4. Surfaces

Fortunately, the coronavirus is easy to kill on surfaces with alcohol and bleach solutions. Clean frequently touched surfaces a few times a day.
